Nafpaktos - Parnassos Greece
The famous and stunning town of Nafpaktos is actually located in Etoloakarnania,
just outside of the county of Fokida. However, the immense beauty and unique
sights make this a town that we should mention, especially for those
of
you who will be travelling by car and can easily reach here.
There are several highlights to this town that every visitor must try and
see. There is the famous castle, located high up on the hill which overlooks
the entire town. Visitors can take a wonderful drive up the hill, and finally
reach the top, where one can then venture inside and take a walk amongst
the grounds of the castle.
This might not be recommended for those with children or who may have problems
walking along sometimes steep and slippery paths. It is best to head up
to the castle wearing good walking shoes, and also with some water, as it
can get quite hot up here, especially during the summer months, where this
is some, but not much, shade.
Walking around the grounds of the castle is a very nice experience, and
you will find some superb panoramic views of the whole town.
There is also the remains of the ancient port, which have towers on the
end, and these are also great for visiting. Again, some of the views from
here are a delight and there are some great photo opportunities. The walls
of this port pass by along part of the beach,
and
even by looking into the gardens of some of the houses near here, you can
see parts of the wall, as well as cellars with rails on them that appear
to be dated from medieval times.
The beach of Nafpaktos is a very large one, and is exceptionally clean.
It was also awarded the "Blue Flag" by the EU for it's clean waters.
During the summer months, the beach is filled with people all enjoying the
clean waters and the lovely Greek sunshine.
Along the beach you will find a huge selection of cafes and bars, restaurants
and tavernas. Sitting back enjoying a drink in the shade and looking around
at the beautiful scenery is a perfect way to relax after a day spent visiting
sites around the town.
Nafpaktos is truely a very beautiful and impressive town, and one can easily
spend a few days here simply visiting the impressive sites and exploring
the small streets of the town.
Also, just to the west of Nafpaktos is the region of Andirio where one can
cross over on the new Rio bridge and arrive in the north-east of the Peloponnese.
