Polidroso - Parnassos Greece
In the valley of Viotic Kifissos, and at the foot of Mount Parnassos,
you will find the village of Souvala, or Polidroso, as it has been called
since 1927.

The many ancient ruins and monuments are evidence that the village belongs
to the main geographical area where the ancient famous and rich city of
Likea was located.
This ancient city was referred to by Homer, as well as the ancient city
of Erohos, about which Hirodotos made comments in his written work.
Evidence that this area was occupied during the medieval century, is the
Byzantine church of Panayia Auromandilas.
The village of Souvala is a continuous extension of Apano Souvala. When
the huge earthquake took place many years ago, the people of Apano Souvala
came and rebuilt their new houses here, during 1870. These days, Apano Souvala
is more of a holiday resort, with it's houses being impressive and of beautiful
architecture.
At a distance of about 2km are the streams of Viotic Kifissos, and they
are named after the church Agia Eleousa, which means "to build near
the stream". At this place, the citizens of the ancient city of Lilaia
were sacred to the river God Kifiso.
You can still see the ancient ruins of the city and temples, as well as
a part of the wall which used to protect the city. Also found here are ruins
of an old Byzantine church Agios Hristoforos (Saint Christopher).
Located to the east of the spring are the ruins of the church of Panayia
Maoromatilas, or Palaio Panayia. This monument is dated back to the second
half of the 6th century, or the beginning of the 7th century.
If you travel a little further to the east of the spring, and stop at the
point known as "Ai-Vasilis" (the visitor), you can see traces
of the acropolis of the ancient city of Erohos. A little further up and
you can see the tower, which is a medieval monument.
Souvala is definitely a place where you can spend time having interesting
walks around, and looking at the sites that there are here. The day can
turn into a kind of treasure hunt, and the further you go and explore, the
more sights and ruins you will come across.
